Larry Miller purchased his first Toyota dealership in the Salt Lake City suburb of Murray, Utah. It opened on May 1, 1979 as Larry H. Miller Toyota. Throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, he acquired a number of automobile dealerships. These include Utah car dealerships, Colorado car dealerships, Arizona car dealerships, New Mexico car dealerships, Idaho car dealerships, Oregon car dealerships and Washington car dealerships, creating Larry H. Miller Automotive. Larry H. Miller Automotive is one of the largest automobile dealers in the U.S.

Early in his career, people described Mr. Miller as a savant; He had this uncanny ability to memorize large parts catalogs in a day when everyone else had to rely on Micro-fiche or large parts books. In 1969 he was a parts guy in a Toyota Dealership and was able to help grow the business with this human-computer like talent and was promoted to run operations for 5 Toyota stores. He also began to appreciate the Toyota brand because of their logical approach to parts as well as the type of customers that were attracted to the brand. A few years later, while enjoying lunch with an owner he asked “when are you going to sell me this dealership?” Mr. Miller wrote a figure out on a napkin which was approved, and then quickly tried to raise the money to pay for the business. As luck would have it, his newly acquired dealership got off to a good start by having the right cars stock piled (Toyota pickup trucks) just before the 1979 oil embargo hit.

Mr. Miller became a partial owner of the Utah Jazz in 1985, about the time when Karl Malone, arguably one of the top 50 basketball players of all times, started playing for the Utah Jazz. Malone became the second highest points scorer in NBA history which might not have been possible without John Stockton as a team mate. Stockton is regarded as one of the best point guards of all time, holding the NBA records for most career assists and steals. During the excitement of a game, the announcer’s play-by-play would go “Stockton to Malone….score!” Wanting to make sure that his star players had their own businesses to run after an NBA career, Mr. Miller established a partnership with Karl Malone to create the “Karl Malone Toyota” store and with John Stockton, you guessed it, “Stockton to Malone Honda”.

Larry H. Miller had a clear vision for his dealerships: to create a truly exceptional experience for a customer. This philosophy always came before all other considerations. He always wanted the customer to feel they were getting an incredible service or life experience. Ask the right questions, make sure you see things from the customer’s viewpoint first, and try your best to give them great value. He used to call it a three legged stool: make a little money, treat the customer right and have fun along the way. Being a teacher and a great coach was important to him within his dealerships. This philosophy can be seen at the quality of the dealership’s service, sales, finance and parts departments.

Mr. Miller first learned firsthand during the time he owned a credit union about the credit needs of his customers and the limited offerings that were often a disservice offered by traditional banks. Credit challenged customers who pay on time deserve a reduced interest rate and reporting to the credit bureaus about their goods payments. You don’t get this in a “Buy here Pay here”. Identifying a customer’s needs has always been a core principal of the Larry H Miller dealerships.
